Exit Glacier - Seward

We made the scenic drive down Highway One, then Highway Nine to Seward.  But just before reaching Seward, we stopped to see the Exit Glacier on the northeast corner of big Kenai Fjords National Park.

Exit Glacier is a glacier derived from the Harding Icefield in the Kenai Mountains of Alaska and one of Kenai Fjords National Park's major attractions. It is one of the most accessible valley glaciers in Alaska.  It received its name for serving as the exit for the first recorded crossing of the Harding Icefield in 1968.

The late afternoon hike brought out the dark shadows and bright lights.

The Exit Glacier comes into view.

The glacier extended to this point in 2005 so it has been gradually melting over decades.

Stick fight!

Getting smart on glaciers.

A good look at the Exit Glacier.

Waterfall in the distance.

Up against the wall.

Ferarri boy.

Exit Glacier has been retreating since the end of the Little Ice Age in 1815.

We hiked to Glacier Overlook.  A perfect hike for us in terms of distance and level of difficulty.
